I Told My Boss I Was Unsure About My Job - The Muse

I Told My Boss I Was Unsure About My Job - The MuseI Told My Boss I Was Unsure About My Job It took me half a year to land my first full-time job- a middle school teaching position with benefits and paid summers. I knew I didnt want to teach in a formal setting, but the opportunity was too good to pass up. Several months in, I was confronted with the realization Id ultimately expected This career track wasnt the right fit for me. Honestly, I didnt know what was. But I did know that I was drained after every nine-hour workday. So, I decided to vent to a co-worker about it- casually, in the hallway, while the kids were at recess. Except this particular co-worker was in a leadership position at the school and it was herbei responsibility to report to our direct manager- the school principal. As you can probably imagine, I was calleuchtdiode into the principals office soon after (yes, this happens even when youre an adult). She wanted me to reflect on how I was contributing to morale by complaining and also understand where my feelings were coming from. So, I did what I thought was my only option- I told her the truth I was having a difficult time adjusting to the responsibilities of the job because I wasnt sure if teaching was what I wanted to do long-term. Much to my surprise, my boss reacted positively. Confessing my concerns led to a solution that completely improved my work experience- and taught me two valuable lessons.1. You Have to Advocate for Yourself at WorkYou know your strengths and weaknesses best, and theyre even mora magnified when youre given responsibilities youre not passionate about. Every leader wants to capitalize on their teams strongest assets- but they need to know what those are to even begin doing so.Once I became transparent about the work I didnt feel confident doing, my boss and I were able to brainstorm strategies to improve my self-esteem and workload. One option included distributing laborious tasks across my team and giving me mora leadership opportunities during lesson planning and teaching. We were even able to reevaluate some of the systems we had in place based on my concerns. When it came to keeping kids on task throughout the day, for example, my main issue wasnt that my behavior management was flawed- it was that some of the systems we had in place needed some fine tuning to help me best work with my students. 2. You Have to Consistently Check in With Your Boss When Things Start to Go DownhillYour boss and colleagues cant help you unless they know you need the help. Finally admitting what was bothering me made me realize I should have done it a lot sooner and a lot more often. Our conversation led me to set personal and professional goals for myself both in this job and future roles I might have, and my manager and I designed a plan to ensure Id reach them in a timely manner. My boss and I stayed in contact throughout the year, and I remained transparent about my uncertainty with middle school teaching e ven after the changes were made. So, we tried something else. When it was time to arrange plans for the next school year, she helped me land a position as a fourth-grade teacher. This meant Id be teaching half the number of students, and because it was elementary school, Id be teaching multiple subjects and not just one- allowing me to explore even more paths for myself. As we had hoped, the switch was a better fit, but I would never have known had we not frequently checked in in the first place. I know, this sounds like a career fairy tale I complained and it all worked out. In your case, that might not be a realistic outcome. If you dont have a manager you can count on to have your back, you may want to do some self-evaluation to diagnose your unhappiness and take steps to improve it. This article can help you reframe how you look at your career, and this one will help you approach your boss with a realistic solution. Whatever you decide to do, just know this before you do it You deserve to have a fulfilling job, but its up to you to make this happen.

Just believing you are multitasking can boost performance

Just believing you are multitasking can boost performanceJust believing you are multitasking can boost performanceFor people who believe that perception is reality, they know that getting someone to believe in something is as good as making it true. This strategy can apply to politics, marketing, and as new research inPsychological Science argues, it can apply to productivity too. While previous research has found that humans are universally bad at doing multiple tasks at once, the new study found that getting people to believe that they were multitasking boosted their performance. Why the illusion of multitasking keeps us mora engagedTo get an engagement boost, you just need to be told that you are multitasking. In the study, the researchers recruited 162 participants and gave them the task of watching and transcribing an Animal Planet educational video. One group was told that they would work on a single task that required them to watch a video and take notes on what was shown. The m ultitasking group was given the same task but was told that they would work on two tasks simultaneously. The reframing of the instructions worked. The researchers suggest that the illusion of multitasking works because thinking we have to do more work forces us to stay engaged. They found that people who were told to multitask showed more pupil dilation during the activity, suggesting that they were using more energy to stay focused.Multitasking is often a matter of perception or can even be thought of as an illusion, Shalena Srna, the studys co-author, said in a statement. Regardless of whether people actually engage in a single task or multiple tasks, making them perceive this activity as multitasking is beneficial to performance.Even if multitasking is all in yur head, the mental reframing can influence our behavior for helpful ends. Next time you have a big task and find yourself distracted, try breaking up the activity into multiple parts to stay focused.

The 10 Most Exciting Trends for Women in 2014 [Pt. 2]

The 10 Most Exciting Trends for Women in 2014 Pt. 2 The 10 Most Exciting Trends for Women in 2014 Pt. 2 Women sharks on the rise (increase of women-owned businesses)Women in the drivers seat (mora female CEOs)Young firms offering jobs for womenWomen going for the gold andWomen becoming tech headsRead on to discover the final five fruchtwein exciting trends and why 2014 will be such an influential year for the ladies.Trend 6 Money-making MusiciansYou noted that women can sing and dance all the way to the bank. What do you mean by that?I recall growing up that there were predominately male bands and musicians on the radio, TV, etc. and very few women. Interesting enough today two women Madonna (age 55) and Lady Gaga (age 27) are the highest paid of all women and men in music and there is a pipeline of women following them such as Taylor Swift, Beyonc, Rihanna, Katie Perry, Pink, etc.The point is that women have many options and can and have achieved in multiple areas. I am excited ab out shows (e.g. American idol) that help emerging artists gain visibility and technology (streaming, YouTube,) where artists can promote themselves.Trend 7 Woman-to-woman marketingWhy is it essential to have more women marketing gurus?I read some interesting statistics on how much spending power women have in the U.S. (85% of all purchases) and yet how many felt that they were being mis-marketed (91%) to because it was men in marketing, not women. A recent case and point I think the move of Mary Barra shows that GM knows that women buy cars.Women buy more than half of the new cars in the U.S., and influence up to 80 percent of all car purchasesWomen spend over $200 billion on new cars mechanical servicing of vehicles each yearAnd we are seeing the trend of women having powerful positions at Advertising firms, as creative directors and key consumer influencers in a number of sectors. This is extremely important to reduce the amount of mis-marketing because women control over $20 Tri llion in worldwide spending.Women are earning, spending, and influencing spending at a greater rate than ever before, accounting for $7 trillion in consumer and business spending in the U.S.Women account for 85 percent of all consumer purchases, including everything from autos to healthcareWomen influenced $90 billion of consumer electronic purchases in 2007Trend 8 Women are financially independentWhat do you mean by Beyond the bling? I think women understand and are concerned about money, investments, savings more than just buying bling. I think women understand the importance and value of financial independence. In the interviews conducted for Women Lead (Peter Lang, 2013) we found that many women had strong mothers as role models who emphasized financial independence and self-sufficiency.And MediaPost offers some very powerful stats when it comes to women and financesThe average American woman is expected to earn more than the average American male by 202851 percent of U.S. priva te wealth is controlled by womenWomen account for over 50 percent of all stock ownership in the U.S.Women control more than 60 percent of all personal wealth in the U.S.Over the next decade, women will control two-thirds of consumer wealth45 percent of American millionaires are women60 percent of high-net-worth women have earned their own fortunesTrend 9 Women are hitting the booksYou state that women are Smart cookies. What do you mean by this and why is it important? In the U.S., the trend is that women are becoming more educated than men. For example, women earned 10 million more college degrees than men since 1982 (61.6 percent AA degrees, 56.7 percent bachelor degrees, 59.9 percent masters degrees, 51.6 percent doctors degrees). The pipeline of women with education is exceeding the pipeline of men and we will see that women will have more options than men as the demand for an educated workforce continues to increase.Trend 10 Breaking through occupational barriersWhat other profes sional areas do you see where women will excel?I think women area making breakthroughs in a number of professional areas such as doctors, lawyer, accountants, etc., and a key factor is working in environments that hilfe integrative lives for women and men so that people can have successful careers and families. For example, the physicians I interviewed for Women Lead (Peter Lang, 2013) noted that many women are pursuing medicine because there are part-time options, which make more sense for familiesOn the finance side, I see a lot of opportunities for women as many finance recruiters confided that firms are seeking executive female leaders for finance roles because they are perceived as more trustworthy than men. I would suggest that women are not your average bean counters. Why is 2014 the breakout year for women?History accelerates future momentum. 2012 was a record year for women running for congress. In 2014 I think we will see the pattern sustain or accelerate. Also, 2012 and 20 14 were record years for women in sports (Olympics). There are increased expectations of younger women and role models will help. We will see more women pursue CEO roles as we have role models from Marissa Meyer (younger age), to Ursula Brown, to Indra Nooyi (Pepsi), to Meg Whitman, to Marry Barra. Women are sharp if they can see a role model that is like them and make it more tangible. We have a number of key female leaders at technology firms (Marissa Meyer, Sheryl Sandberg, Meg Whitman, Ursula Brown) this excites me because we have women who can show women the way in technology, and I think this will help more women pursue technology fields as they are already fast adopters.

38 lessons that will help you write a good business email

38 lessons that will help you write a good business email 38 lessons that will help you write a good business email I had to write emails every day for 4 years in a high-pressured sales environment. During that time I screwed up a lot. I let my emotions show in emails, made the mistake of being too casual, and sent novella-length emails that were probably never read and should have been conversations in person.

Brag Your Way to a New Job or Pay Raise

Brag Your Way to a New Job or Pay Raise Brag Your Way to a New Job or Pay Raise Brag Your Way to a New Job or Pay Raise It's a jungle out there in the working world. Employers aren't as loyal to their workers as they were a few decades ago. And many, if not most, employees are more likely to just jump ship and look for new jobs if they don't feel they're getting what they want out of their current ones. The problem is that many employees begin their job search unprepared. They don't keep track of their most recent accomplishments, so when it comes time to write or update their resume, they've forgotten most of the big things they've done. And forgetting a couple of important accomplishments on your resume can mean the difference between getting the job and not getting even the chance to interview. That's why it's important to keep a brag sheet. It can be a simple document, like a Word file, that you update every time you make a noteworthy accomplishment or reach an important goal at work. The brag sheet can also help when it's time for your performance review. If your boss overlooks or neglects to include something positive that could improve your review, you can use the brag sheet to help you state your case and maybe even earn a bigger raise. Here's an example of an information technology project manager's brag sheet: Feb. 10 Software implementation project for accounting department came in two days ahead of schedule. Department manager very pleased with new functionality. Feb. 20 Department VP said software project came in $1,500 under budget, a 10% savings, which came at a good time since the company is thinking budget cuts for second quarter. April 2 Hired a very skilled contractor to help us with networking project. We didn't have the skills in-house so he'll really help. I talked with three prospects but I'm sure this guy has what we want and can work effectively with rest of the team. April 23 I was right. This guy's good. All the others on the project team, especially Elaine and Mike, agree! When you're ready to update your resume or sit down for your review, you can look back at your entries and whip them into statements you can make about your performance. Here's what the above four entries communicate: The project manager made a critical deadline. He has a reference who can attest to the project's success. He helped the company save a little money. He has an eye for talent with the contractor, and has references who can back that up. Those are critical messages that can help advance your career either within the company or with a different employer. Remember that hiring managers are more interested in reading about what you've accomplished in your career rather than what titles you've held or what duties were listed on your job description. That's why you should record this data and use it when you need to look for a new job, or at performance review time. Make the employer aware of your value!

What Employers Must Know About Hiring Convicted Felons

What Employers Must Know About Hiring Convicted Felons What Employers Must Know About Hiring Convicted Felons Hiring a convicted felon isnt what most businesses set out to do. In fact, most companies would prefer to hire people who will be soon nominated for sainthood, which leaves candidates with a criminal record out. Employers need to keep in mind, though, that many saints have checkered pasts and so may some of your best employees. Heres what you need to know about hiring employees with a criminal history. What Is Ban the Box? Most job applications have a box that applicants check off to say whether or not they have any felony or misdemeanor convictions. But, 25 states and several cities have passed “ban-the-box”  laws. Some additional states have “fair chance” legislation, which means that you cant ask the applicant about convictions on a job application. Individual state laws vary, so double check your state or other governmental jurisdictions laws before you ask a person to fill out an application. As a general rule, ban the box means that you cant ask about any convictions until you get to the job offer stage of the selection process. The Purpose of Ban-the-Box Laws Whats the purpose behind these laws? The state has a vested interest in getting people with a criminal history working - having a job reduces the chance of recidivism. If you want to lower crime, you want people working instead of returning to their bad ways. But the other reason for ban-the-box laws is to stop discrimination against black men. However, research has shown that this may not be working as desired - since employers cant ask about criminal history, they are less likely to interview black and Hispanic candidates. Researchers looked at low-skilled men between the ages of 25 to 34 and determined that “in ban-the-box areas...  employers are less likely to interview young, low-skilled black men  because those groups are more likely to include ex-offenders. They instead focus on hiring groups made up of men they believe are less likely to have gone to prison.” So, while the laws may help actual convicts, they can adversely affect low-skilled black men who have no criminal history. When Can You Ask About a Persons Criminal History? In all states, you can ask about felony convictions before you actually hire an employee. The ban-the-box legislation just prevents you from asking about criminal history before youre ready to make an offer. When youre ready to make an offer  you can do a background check which involves asking  about any convictions. Can You Reject an Applicant Because of a Criminal History? The answer to this question is sometimes. Some convictions prevent you from having certain types of jobs altogether. For instance, if you run a daycare, you absolutely can and must reject convicted child sexual abusers. Thats an easy decision. In other areas, the decision is not so cut and dried. Rejecting people based on their criminal history may violate the Civil Rights Act of 1964s Title VII. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission says that there are two key points when considering how to treat convicted job candidates. They say: Title VII prohibits employers from treating people with similar criminal records differently because of their race, national origin, or another Title VII-protected characteristic (which includes color, sex, and religion).Title VII prohibits employers from using policies or practices that screen individuals based on criminal history information if:They significantly disadvantage Title VII-protected individuals such as African Americans and Hispanics; ANDThey do not help the employer accurately decide if the person is likely to be a responsible, reliable, or safe employee. Ban-the-box legislation is an attempt to comply with the first part of this (although, its not working), but what about the second part? First, you cant assume an arrest means a person committed a crime that would disqualify the person from the job. If your candidate has a conviction, you can consider that they committed the crime of which they were convicted. If there is simply an arrest, you can use that to start an  inquiry into whether or not the person should be disqualified. How Do You Determine Whether to Hire a Candidate With a Criminal History? But, how do you determine if the convicted person is “likely to be a responsible, reliable, or safe employee”? Thats going to vary based on state laws,  but here are some general guidelines. Treat people of different races/genders the same. If you go ahead and hire a white man with a drug conviction because it was “just a youthful indiscretion” and then reject a black man with a similar conviction youre violating the law.How long has it been since the conviction? If the job candidate has a conviction for shoplifting from six months ago, you can make a strong argument that this is not a trustworthy individual. If that conviction occurred 20 years ago, however, and no repeat convictions have occurred - not so much. How does the conviction relate to the job? You can reject a person who embezzled from a previous employer as your companys comptroller, but probably not for a job as a landscaper with no access to funds.Did you give the candidate a chance to explain himself? If a candidate has a conviction that you say disqualifies him for the position, the EEOC requires you to give the person a chance to demonstrate that the exclusion should not be applied due to his particular circumstances. This means that youll have to sit down and listen to what the candidate has to say and perhaps collect some additional information. Always Consult With Your Attorney About Hiring Employees With a Criminal History If you wish to reject a job candidate based on a conviction, before you do so,  please consult with your employment law attorney. Because state and even local laws can vary considerably, you cant make generalized judgments on what you think is best for your business. You need to ensure that you have followed the law precisely and that you arent violating Title VII in any way. Many companies skip consulting with their attorney because that discussion costs money. But, its considerably cheaper to pay for an initial consultation than to  have to pay for the resulting lawsuit. Remember, even  lawsuits that you win are incredibly expensive to litigate. For jobs with state licensing, use the licensing procedures as your guidelines. If the licensing agency allows the person to have a license with that particular conviction, you should most likely (consult with your attorney) not consider rejecting the candidate because of that conviction either. When trying to decide how you want to shape your policy regarding convicted felons, consider the true nature of your business. Does your business require actual saints or are normal humans enough?   - - - - - - - - - - - - Suzanne Lucas is a freelance journalist specializing in Human Resources. 11 creative ways to make money that dont involve the internet

11 creative ways to make money that don’t involve the internet 11 creative ways to make money that don’t involve the internet Raise your hand if you have heard all the ways to make money online?OK, put your hand down now (Especially if you’re at work), you don’t want to look crazy waving your hand all around. Chances are you have seen all the ways to make money online already.Whether it includes filling out some surveys,  selling panties online, starting a blog, or drop shipping a product using some combination of Amazon and Facebook, if you haven’t done so already chances are you might not ever get around to it.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!    On the other hand, after experiencing temporary vision loss from filling out countless surveys you thought delivering some food for Uber Eats or driving people around in your sedan were going to be the answers to your money woes.Sure you can  make money fast, but if you’re someone who doesn’t want to sub out your car on Friday nights and you do n’t feel like starting your own blog, chances are you might be looking for ways to make money that don’t involve the internet.Don’t worry, we got you covered. Here is a list of 11 creative ways to make money easily, without having to use the internet!1. Sell your poopWhy not start the list out with a bang… or should we say a big you know what. All bad jokes aside, you can sell your poop for medical reasons just like selling breast milk, eggs or donating plasma.Stool donations are used for research, but also for patients in need of a fecal transplant because of serious medical issues caused what’s commonly referred to as “C.Diff.” If you’re serious about selling your poop, look into stool donations  here at OpenBiome.2. Work as a mystery shopperLike to play pretend? If so you might make a good mystery shopper.Imagine running into your local grocery store and trying to buy beer without identification or stumbling onto a car lot and pretending to want to test drive a sw eet car.If going from place to place around town sounds fun to you, then being a mystery shopper might be calling your name. As a mystery shopper you can pretend to shop and make money in the process! For a list of the best mystery shopping companies to work for, checkout  Penny Hoarder’s article here.3. Become a flower wholesalerA flower wholesaler or flower distributor is sort of like a florist, but on a contract with a larger chain.Instead of owning a traditional florist shop which requires a passion for flowers and extensive background knowledge, a flower wholesaler is a bit different. Mega wholesale chains like Sam’s Club and Costco use vendors for a large amount of their services. One of those services â€" flowers. One reader at  Money Life Wax  described how his mom was a flower vendor for a Costco that he later took over the contract for.Flower Vendor Pros: Early mornings Quick hours Simple, doesn’t require much experience Pays extremely well for the amount of work Flower Vendor Cons: Early morning hours Finding your “In” as a vendor Gaining enough experience (See if you can work for another) Not passive in anyway can be demanding 4. Pick-up dog wasteI swear, I don’t have some infatuation with human or pet waste, but there is a “S” ton of money in poop. Think about it. Every day around the country pets, especially dogs, poop somewhere outside. Some pet owners are even too lazy to walk their dog, so they stick them out in the backyard to to their dirty business. Then ever couple of weeks they pay a dog waste service to come pick up the dumps. You can even start your own company, like “When Duty Calls!” Also, pay attention the next time you go for a walk around your neighborhood. Look at all the little dog stations where residents dispose of their pet waste. Who empties those and replaces the little baggies?Land a few contracts or clients and you have yourself quite the money maker, who would have thought!5. Chase geeseSimilar to picking up dog waste, people in communities don’t want to deal with the pesky Canadian geese and all of their droppings as they migrate north and south each summer. If you have ever lived near a pond or reservoir and taken a walk, you may have found yourself looking down and dodging goose poop with every step you took. Not only is this annoying, it quickly becomes annoying to property managers fielding complaint after complaint. So many have turned to using “Geese Removal” companies and specialists to help with the problem. With the combination of trained dogs and placing deterrents around ponds, this is a simple way to make some money without the internet.6. Power wash thingsOverhead costs: Power washer. After you get your power washer, most power washing gigs are straight profit aside from buying soaps/chemicals. If you have neighbors with old fences and decks, your power washing services could be very handy.Chances are, anyone who has ever tried to powerwash on their own has quickly found out that after about 5 minutes of getting soaking wet â€" it isn’t that fun.Just be sure to watch a few  YouTube videos  on power washing ahead of time, but you c an easily charge $30 an hour, by the foot or flat rates.7. Cleanup crime scenesThe title said creative ways to make money and being a crime scene cleanup specialist might finish a close second to mailing your poop around the country.Crime scene cleanup technicians specialize in the forensic cleanup of blood, bodily fluids, and any other potentially infectious materials that may be left behind at a crime or accident. In other words, you get to go behind the yellow tape, but only to clean-up the mess left behind.Luckily a crime scene cleanup specialist doesn’t have to deal with moving bodies and there is no experience required (Not sure how you would get experience in this area anyways?). While many leverage this as a career, you can actually get certified and be “On call.”If you think a career or even a certification is worth it,  use this link  to find out where you can recieve crime scene cleanup training near you.8. Organize design closetsIf you’re creative and pretty han dy with a drill, organizing closets might be your way to make some extra money. The average closet design costs a homeowner somewhere in the neighborhood of $2,000-$6,000 according to  Thumbtack.com. So if you have the ability to draw some closet designs you can make an extra $1,000 reorganizing/designing closets.A closet side hustle will consist of installing shelves and systems, but as you advance your word of mouth referrals have the potential to take off!9. Have reoccurring yard salesNotice, the title for this one was plural. There are pro yardsalers out there that buy stuff and resell stuff every weekend year round. Some will reserve their garage for ongoing yard sales bringing in a couple $100 each month.Having a yard sale every few weeks to sell your treasures and finds is a quick way to make some extra money each month. Posting your items on websites like Craigslist, Offerup and Ebay are great ways to generate sales too. When having yard sales, make sure you always: Start early Recognize simple things sell and add up (Like a wooden spoon for $1) Bargain and upsell other items into a sale Make it easier to see everything Have signs that lead people to your house Conversate and get to know the person, they’ll stick around and buy more 10. Wholesale housesWholesaling houses is what you read, your eyes still work. This might sound a little dicey, but here is the process in a nutshell: Find distressed properties and gets them under contract for 70 cents on the dollar. Without ever pulling a loan or sitting down at the table, sell the distressed property for 80-90 cents on the dollar to a house flipper As the middleman, the end buyer closes and the wholesaler keeps the spread At this point you might be asking why would someone want to buy from a wholesaler? The wholesalers services are in high demand because of the energy, time and hassle they commit to finding properties for flippers.11. Mow grass shovel snowOK, this might not be that creative, but it works and it’s very simple.Grass comes back every spring and grows well into the fall in most locations. Right when the grass starts to die, snow rears its ugly head in most places around the country. Offering your services to a few neighbors each month can help you make a few $100 each month.Quick Math: 4 lawns, $25 a pop, 2x per month = $200 a month. Do this for 6 months every time you cut your grass and you have an extra $1,200 annually.Marketing tip to help you land lawn and snow clients â€" look for long grass and older people. If your neighbor is older or the person down the street as long grass, simply ask them (I have made well over $2,000 over the last few years cutting 1-3 neighbors yards each month). My takeaway to making money without the internet:Making money in 2019 outside of your full time job is all the buzz. But sometimes I find myself sick of being on my computer. As someone who teaches full time, blogs at night I am on a computer way more than I want to be depending on the week. So personally, I don’t mind chasing the geese at the pond or mowing my neighbors grass. It gets me out of the house and besides, who doesn’t enjoy doing something a little different to make money? This article originally appeared on Your Money Geek. You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

The Beretta M9 Pistol Is Replaced By Sig Sauer P320

The Beretta M9 Pistol Is Replaced By Sig Sauer P320 The Beretta M9 Pistol Is Replaced By Sig Sauer P320 The U.S. Military does not make major moves like changing handguns very often. In fact, there have only been three primary weapons used by the military for the past 100 years. The M1911 (.45 caliber) had been in service since World War I, through the Korean War, through World War II, as well as Vietnam War and into the early 1980s when the M9 Beretta started the handgun contract. Now, Sig Sauer is rolling out its modular M17 and M18 (compact version) into the 21st century. New Modular Sig Suaer Replaces M9 Beretta After 35 years, formerly the M9 Beretta, a 9mm handgun made in Italy, was the weapon of choice for the military since 1982. A new contract has been granted to the German company Sig Sauer for its more advanced modular handgun system called the P320.  Also, a 9mm NATO handgun, however, the modular capabilities allow it to be configured to shoot .357, and .40 caliber sized ammunition. The interchangeable grips allow for all hand sizes to find the perfect fit for shooting the weapon ambidextrously. The Army will be purchasing up to 500,000 of the new Sig Sauer P320 which has been thoroughly vetted by gun experts since it has appeared on the market since 2014.  Sig Sauer contract could be worth up to $500 million with all the weapons and parts being made in the manufacturing plant in the United States (New Hampshire). In November 2017, members of the Army received the first P320 handguns which will be designated the M17 and M18 pistols.  This first batch went to the 101st Airborne.  Now, all combat units carry the M4 as a primary weapon and a secondary handgun.  Within the next few years, all Army units will be replacing the M9 with the M17. What Else Does the P320 Have? One of the key features of the P320 is an internal stainless steel frame and control unit.  Rust has been a problem with weapon systems of the past, especially when exposed to salt water. The weapon also has an ambidextrous slide release (one on each side of the pistol). Modular weapon system means, the fire control unit allows the user to interchange differently-sized slide assembly or polymer grip frame modules as well as chambering conversions to adapt the gun to the individual user and address different needs (larger caliber ammo, hand size, etc.). One of the soldier friendly features is the P320 can be cleaned and field stripped with no tools. There are four side slides on the weapon allowing for a variety of rail mounted laser sights, tactical lights, and other accessories. Breaking With A 35 Year History As recent at 2009, Beretta had secured a contract worth $200 million to supply the U.S. military with 450,000 of the handguns through the year 2015. However, from 2015 â€" 2017 the contract was open for competition and finally after a long and drawn out bureaucratical mess, the Department of Defense decided to break ties with Beretta and accept the Sig Sauer proposal. How significant is it that the U.S. military change course with its selected firearm?  The Beretta (M9) pistol was originally selected as the main handgun of the U.S. Army in the late 1980s.  Beretta, in fact, a few years earlier was the replacement weapons manufacturer to the M1911 handgun that was originally adopted by the U.S. Army in 1911.  The Beretta pistol was praised for its accuracy and the fact that its magazine holds 15 rounds and that each bullet is 9 millimeters in size. These specifications complied with standardization of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), a military alliance that the U.S. belongs to. Problems and Controversy With Previous Handgun The Beretta M9 pistol has encountered problems and been criticized by some in the military. During the early 1990s, the pistol encountered mechanical defects. Specifically, the springs in the gun’s magazine malfunctioned. Use of the Beretta was limited within the military after problems with easily rusting magazines and springs after getting wet.  If wet with salt water, it was not long before rust was part of the weapon and needed to be cleaned immediately.  This is largely due to the fact that the U.S. Army did not purchase magazines directly from Beretta, the gun’s manufacturer. In several cases, magazines have had to be replaced on the M9 pistol.  Despite these setbacks, the M9 and M9A1 continued to be the primary sidearm of American soldiers until 2017.   The Sig P320 is not without its issues. There have been accidently firings of the weapon when dropped on the ground. In fact, a few police departments placed the weapon on hold until Sig has corrected the problem. In August of 2017, Sig Sauer has started to correct the problem.   As of July 2019, the U.S. Army approved Full Material Release (FMR) of its new 9mm Modular Handgun Sig Sauer M17 / M18.  Nearly 60,000 have been delivered to military armories so far and more than 350,000 of the pistols will be delivered throughout the next several years.  The adoption of the M17 and M18 Sig Sauer is military wide with all services making the change.

How to Land an Internship at MTV

How to Land an Internship at MTV How to Land an Internship at MTV How do I get a MTV internship? Its a popular question for wanna-be music business workers who have their sights set on a career either behind the scenes at MTV or in front of the cameras. Competition is fierce for MTV internships (and internships at their sister music networks), but the prize is well worth it. That kind of hands-on experience at a major music industry company and exposure to the real-world environment that you can expect after graduation  can be a big career boost.   MTV is part of media company Viacom, which offers a summer associate program. Prospective summer associates apply via the Viacom Careers Summer Associate portal.  The 10-week program is for recent college graduates, and according to Viacoms website, its more than a behind-the-scenes view of the music industry.   What to Expect from a Viacom Internship Those chosen as summer associates for one of Viacoms properties, which along with MTV include Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, Spike TV, and VH1, will receive what the company calls an immersive experience. Advisers will help associates develop a group business proposal to senior executives and many former associates are hired at the end of their summer program. Get familiar with the channel you want to work for and be willing to pivot if you dont get your first choice. Its worth considering an offer to work at VH1 if there isnt a place for you at MTV, for instance. If there are a lot of candidates for the on-camera positions, consider whether youd want to be part of the team that staffs MTVs Facebook or Twitter pages. Try not to limit yourself to just one potential job; a foot in the door is always valuable for recent graduates looking to break into the industry. Viacom and MTVs summer associates work in a variety of departments, including engineering, product, UX and UI design, digital research, content production, and marketing. This may include work beyond on-air projects, including social media, live events, and web and mobile sites. Applications open in October and close in November, with specific dates depending on the department. First-round candidates are chosen by January, with in-person interviews in late January and February. Candidates will know if theyve made the cut by mid-March. The summer associate program then begins in June.   Make Sure You Meet the Requirements MTVs summer associate program is for recent college graduates, but there are usually other opportunities available for undergraduates through Viacoms College Relations department. They tend to vary based on the department and individual channel. You also might seek out internship information through your own college placement office. And  MTV frequently has internship drives on college campuses, so find out if and when they are scheduled to swing by your school.   Prepare Your Resume Here is your chance to sell yourself. Although not having  music industry work experience isnt a deal breaker, if you do have some hands-on music work, by all means, play it up here. And the more versatile you are, the better the chances youll be considered for different positions. Youll want your internship resume to reflect any other skills that would make you a viable candidate, like social media or writing experience. Former MTV interns report that the interview process can move swiftly, so be prepared well before you get that first phone call. And while internships at any of Viacoms properties are highly competitive, being a well-rounded and enthusiastic candidate will get you a long way for any opportunity.
