What to do when the workplace Omarosa has choice words about your company
What to do when the workplace Omarosa has choice words about your companyWhat to do when the workplace Omarosa has choice words about your companyOmarosa Manigault-Newman. Her name sparks memories of her three runs on TheApprentice, but most recently she has spent time in the political spotlight and back to the world of reality TV as a contestant on CBSCelebrity Big Brother. But wherever you fall on the political spectrum, one thing is abundantly clear, as it has been for years now The formerdirector of communications for the Office of Public Liaison has no problem speaking her mind - especially when it comes to her experiences working in the White House under the Trump Administration.Omarosa is now a former employee, but shes leaving salaciousdetails about what she says she witnessed there in her wake.Watch Omarosa spill the beans in her own wordsOmarosa talks about working under President Trump during a conversation with fellow contestant Ross Matthews.I was haunted by tweets every single day, like, what is he gonna tweet next? she whispered. In response to Matthews question about whether or notlage anyone tried to step in and moderate the presidents behavior, Omarosa said, I mean, I tried to be that person and then all of the people around him attacked me.She responded tearfully to a question about who has the authority to say whats happening at The White House Its not my circus, not my monkeys, you know, Id like to say not my problem, but I cant say that because its bad.Omarosa nods gravely in response to Rosss question about if Americans should be worried.Cue the White Houses responseBut of course, there was more - this time, Omarosa talked about Vice President Pence. As bad as yall think Trump is, you would be worried about Pence. So everybody thats wishing for impeachment might wanna reconsider their life. We would be begging for days of Trump back if Pence became president, thats all Im saying. Omarosa said. So, what can you do if an ex-employee speaks ou t? Here are three steps to take if an Omarosa is badmouthing your company after being let go.Dont add to the mess In an article about the hacking of website AshleyMadison, lawyer Michael Trachtman told Mashablehow companies should proceed if an angry former employee speaks out.Unless the employees statements really damage you for instance, the employee is making false statements that really do impact your customers or employees leave it alone, Trachtman said. If you make an issue out of it, there will be little to gain, and you will probably make it worse the disgruntled employee will know that he or she has gotten under your skin, and that will fuel the fire. but dont be a pushoverRosabeth Moss Kanter, an author, a hochschulprofessor at Harvard Business School and chair and director of the Harvard Advanced Leadership Initiative, writes in the Harvard Business Review that you should respond to rumors immediately.Dont let slurs stand without a response that is accurate, persuasive , and catchy, she continues. And put out the counter-story without repeating the insult.Be preemptive Make your employees feel appreciatedAnca Bradley, a Brand Management Director at Fruition, writes in Entrepreneur that there is a way to help keep employees from going off the rails. Its important to first hire the right people. This can involve a lengthier hiring process, but a company with employees that are happy and dedicated to their jobs is less likely to become a breeding ground for saboteurs, Bradley says. Disgruntled employees should be dealt with immediately. If they must be let go, proper exit interviews are a must. However, the best defense against sabotage is to first prevent it. Treat your employees well, and create a corporate culture in which every voice counts.

8 Ways to Gain the Respect of Your Coworkers
8 Ways to Gain the Respect of Your Coworkers8 Ways to Gain the Respect of Your CoworkersSome people just walk into a room, and every eye and ear are immediately tuned into them. Is this magic? Doubtful. In reality, that parteie has worked very hard over the years to gain the respect of the people who work around him. You can earn the respect of the people with whom you work as well. Follow the Rules Sure, on television or in the movies, its always the rogue cop or the office worker who pushes the limits who wins the rewards and praise. In real life, its the person who does what they are supposed to do. This is especially important if youre the boss or work in a management role. The boss who slacks offfrom working, comes in late, leaves early, and spends more time shopping online than working, wont engender respect from the coworkers. While the effect of rule-following isnt as strong among peers, it leise plays a critical role. People dont respect people who dont respect the rules . This is especially true in a workplace where most employees do follow the rules. After all, they were put in place for a reason. Whether to create workplace harmony or to fairly and ethically deal with employees, workplace rules most often are carefully thought out. Work Hard This is one area where the television shows get it right- that cop may break all of the rules, but he certainly puts in the hours. Now, working hard doesnt mean you need to work 80 hours a week, but it does mean that you need to work when youre supposed to work. If youre an exempt employee, youll probably need to put in a bit more time than the office norm. If youre a non-exempt employee, make sure that you clear all overtime with your boss before working it. You dont get respect by working off the clock or by surprising your boss with your time card. Working hard also means that you need to spend your work time on work. You wont earn the status of a respected employee if you are viewed by others as a per son who steals time from your employer. Talk Less, Listen More You may think that the person with the most respect is the one standing at the head of the conference table giving the presentation, but thats not always the case. If you feel as if you always need to talk, youre not likely the most respected person in the room. People gain respect by actually listening to the ideas of others. This doesnt mean that you cant share your ideas, but it does mean that you need to pay attention to what others are saying. Remember, you were hired to do your job, and other employees were hired to do theirs. That may seem like a super basic statement, but, in practical terms, it means that other people are experts on tasks outside of your expertise. So, listen to what they have to say about their area of expertise. Recognize that, in listening to your coworkers, you treat them with respect. This respect engenders respect for you and what you have to say. Assume the Best About People and Si tuations When the accounts payable person tells you that it will take three days to get the suppliers check cut, dont assume that its because shes lazy. She may be lazy, but she probably also needs to follow required processes and procedures that restrict her ability to respond toyourtimeliness requirements. Just because you dont understand why or when something happens doesnt mean that a valid reason doesnt exist. Apologize and Admit Mistakes Youre not perfect. No one is. You will make mistakes. If you want respect, you need to admit your mistakes. Practice this statement, Im sorry. What can I do to fix it? The last part is critical in many situations- otherwise, the apology is just an empty statement. If youre the boss, you take the blame for the teams failures as well as your own. If youre an individual contributor, you need to take the blame for your own missteps. A mistake isnt a career ender. Not admitting a mistake can become a career ender. Take Criticism and Learn fr om It Having people respect you isnt dependent on people thinking that youre right all of the time. Its about people trusting you and appreciating what you have to say. Just like you need to take your lumps when you make a mistake, you need to listen to what people have to say about you. Your boss thinks your marketing plan stinks? Well, ask her why and carefully consider what she has to say. Your direct report thinks that your marketing plan stinks? Well, ask her why and carefully consider what she has to say. Those last two lines werent an accidental repeat of the preceding lines. Whether the criticism comes from above or below you must carefully consider what the person had to say. Go ahead and ask questions. They may be right. They may be dead wrong, but you wont know unless you consider it. Stand up for Yourself The above is not a suggestion tolet people walk all over you. You can carefully consider criticism and say, Jane, I heard what you said about the marketing plan no t hitting the right target, but I disagree. I believe that the market research shows that blah, blah, blah. If someone criticizes your personal appearance, family status, race, gender, whatever, you can certainly call them on it. Im sorry, the fact that I look young has what to do with this? Standing up for yourself is critical to earning respect from coworkers and bosses. On the other side, though, dont go looking for offense where no offense is intended. If you get upset about every little comment anyone makes, youll look like a whiner. Some things, you just need to let them go. Help Others Succeed Think about who you respect the most. Is it someone who pushed people under the bus right and left on her way to the top? Probably not. (And if it is, pleaseconsider getting therapy.) Instead, you undoubtedly respect someone who was kind and helpful. So, if you want others to respect you, try doing the same. Take time to mentor. Dont get angry when your direct reports, peers, or bos ses make mistakes. Just help them get the job done and done right. When you lift up those around you, you all rise together. - - - - - - - - - - - - Suzanne Lucas is a freelance journalist specializing in Human Resources. 3D Printing Compete or CoExist
3D Printing Compete or CoExist 3D Printing Compete or CoExist 3D Printing Compete or Co-Exist?Having proven its value for rapid prototyping, 3D printing is, for sure, having a major impact on the konzeption of products and consequently on the overall manufacturing process. But there is still debate about how far 3D printing will be extended. Will it replace much traditional manufacturing processes or exist alongside it?Vicki Holt, CEO of Proto Labs, which pioneered rapid manufacturing of custom partes by taking a 3D printing-like digital approach to the front end of the traditional, or subtractive, manufacturing processes of injection molding and CNC machining, believes 3D printing is opening opportunities for design flexibility but that its going to co-exist with traditional manufacturing processes. She says each process has its own benefits and its own drawbacks and a decision about which to choose depends on a number of factors.A Selective Laser Sintering part the part is shown on top of the powder from which it is made.3D printing brings another set of tools to the toolkit for design engineers, Holt says. It can make new product introductions faster and less expensive during the design phase. If Proto Labs business is any indication, design engineers are taking advantage of it. Holt says growth of her companys 3D printing business, which it acquired in April of last year with the purchase of FineLine Prototyping, Inc., grew by 79 percent in the first quarter of this year over first quarter last year (prior to the acquisition). As for being used for final versions of products or components, that is still in very early stages. A survey last year by Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PwC) and ZPryme asked mora than 100 industrial manufacturers how they were using 3D printing technology. Only 0.9 percent said they were using 3D printing for producing final products or components, but 24.6 percent said they were using 3D printing for prototyping only, 28.9 percent said they were experimenting with how 3D printing may apply to their business, and 33.3 percent said they were not implementing 3D printing at that time.Proto Labs estimates that 90 percent of its 3D printing business is for prototyping compared to 75 percent for CNC machining and about 50 percent for injection molding. Holt says those are really estimates because they dont always know how the items they produce are going to be used.An image of a DMLS part showing the intricacy that can be achieved. 3D printing today is slow and expensive if you are going to produce a lot of a part, Holt says. Its much more cost effective to machine or injection mold. And also you are limited on the materials that have been developed for a 3D printer. Those are the things that need to be improved. There is a lot of work being done in those areas. I am confident there are going to be next generation machines that are beginning to assess that. She says much depends on a customers needs. Generally, ProtoLabs cus tomers order a 3D-printed part when the maximum number is 50 or maybe 100 if its a small part. She identified the medical device market, aerospace, industrial machining and robotics as industries that are leading the way in using 3D printing.Part of the reason I think these industries tend to buy from us is that they do a lot of prototyping innovation and development and they need samples to go and develop their products, she says. If you are manufacturing one spacecraft, for example, you only need to print it once. You dont need millions, and for that you can develop a novel design that you couldnt do with a traditional manufacturing process and also collapse a number of parts into one. It might even be more efficient that way.PwC reported in an issue of its Technology Forecast magazine on emerging uses of 3D printing in several industry sectors including automotive and industrial manufacturing, aerospace, healthcare, retail, and sports. Uses range from consolidation of several par ts into a single, more complex part to customized medical products and safer protective gear.In fact, Ford, General Electric, and Medtronics are companies at the forefront Ford for auto parts, GE for jet engine parts, and Medtronics for prototyping medical devices. Holt says she is also starting to see some design engineers take a look at a whole assembly of parts and question whether there is a way to consolidate the parts, print the whole thing, and skip the assembly. This could bring about both cost savings and faster production, she says. That alone could be a gamechanger.Nancy S. I know your ideas will be a particular interest to our small, and medium sized companies that are looking to grow their brand online. Thanks very much. Its just awesome to be here, Connie, and I really welcome the opportunity to speak to the community. Lets talk about this idea, The New Rules of Selling. Lets start off with a story about Antarctica, and what I have noticed in so many markets is that everybody is selling, but how people buy has changed. I really wanted to go to Antarctica ever since I welches a six years old. I just really excited about getting to Antarctica. Finally, in 2013 I decided it welches time to go, and I asked my wife, Yukari, Hey, you want to go to Antarctica with me?And shes like, No way. I dont want to go to Antarctica.I said, Why?And she said, Because Im worried about throwing up on the way over, across the Drake Passage in the expedition ship, and I just dont want to get sea sick.So now Im on a mission. Ive got to convince my wife that we can go to Antarctica together and that she wont get sick in doing so. So I went to the Google machine and I did what we all do when we are researching a problem. I typed in Antarctic travel and got a bunch of search results, and I started to check out what I was finding. The first company was the fruchtwein famous. The first company I checked out was National Geographic, and I noticed on their site, they had this big button that said, Request a reservation. Now, Im not ready for a reservation. Im ready, simply, to learn mora about traveling to Antarctica, and specifically to figure out what its like to cross the Drake Passage, and whether my wife will get sick or not because Im trying to convince her to go with me. But here is this particular company trying to sell to me before Im ready. Then I found the company that had the best search engine optimization, and I found on their site, they wanted me to fill out this big fat form before they were willing to give me information, and they wanted me to become their sales lead. I dont want to become your sales lead. Im just trying to figure out how to get to Antarctica. Then I found the low cost provider. Now I dont know about you, but if I am going sail for two days from the southernmost city in the world in Argentina to Antarctica, I dont want to go on a low cost provider. And then I found quarkspeise Expeditions. This company was educating me and informing me about what its like to get to Antarctica, and I found them to be extremely helpful. I was looking through the content on their site, and I said to my wife Yukari, Look at unterstellung amazing penguins and animals that we can see. Wouldnt you love to see this cute l ittle chinstrap penguin in Antarctica? And Yukari said, Oh yeah, that penguin is pretty cute but Im just still not ready to go to Antarctica. Im still worried about throwing up across the Drake Passage. So Im still on this mission to try to figure out how I can convince her to go with me.Now this is a long process. This is taking several months. Long sales cycle. I found more information on the site to share with her, and then I actually connected with the people at Quark Expeditions. How people buy has changed because I can connect with them on Twitter. I can connect with my friends on social networks, and I can say, Hey, anyone been to Antarctica? And, in fact, through a couple of people I knew, I was introduced to others who had been to Antarctica. I could learn a little bit from them. But then Quark Expeditions actually communicated with me instantly, and in real time, through their Twitter ID, Quark Expeditions, and then, I communicated, also in real time, with the CEO of Quark Expeditions, Hans. And they helped me to solve this problem of convincing my wife to go to Antarctica with me. Then I reached out to Quark Expeditions when I started to gather enough information where Im ready to engage a sales person. Now the interesting thing here is the other companies were trying to sell to me, trying to make me part of their lead generation program, but Im not ready yet. This is the way people buy. Right? We make our decisions on our own time.vAnd, Paul, a polar adviser, got back to me right away, and he provided me a link to a blog post on the Quark Expeditions site written by a doctor about how to take care of seasickness on a crossing of the Drake Passage. They even sent me a YouTube video from Quark Expeditions that I could check out about what its like to cross the Drake Passage. They were, throughout the entire process, educating and informing me. They understood that the way that people buy has changed. Again, this process, this entire process was taking several months. It was a long sales cycle. And finally, I got to the point where yes, Ive convinced my wife. This process has helped me to convince my wife, and now she agreed. She wanted to go Antarctica with me, so I was really excited. This is not a cheap trip its $20,000 to buy two tickets to Antarctica. Something that I had been dreaming of for a long time. Saving up my money to do it, and finally my wife agreed to do it with me. But when we did go to Antarctica together, we did not go with the most famous expedition company. We did not go with the company that has the best search engine optimization. We certainly didnt go with the cheapest provider. We went with the one that had the best content, and was the most engaged. And thats the idea of the new rules of selling. The new rules of selling is this concept of how can you understand your buyers really, really well. So well that you can create on the web the kind of content that theyll find and that theyll become engaged with, and that will allow them to help to educate themselves about the products and services that you provide, so that when they finally are ready to make a buying decision because the buyers are in control not us as sellers they will already be really far along on the selling process, and all you have to do is to provide a little more information and close the deal, which is exactly what happened with Quark Expedition. So buyers are in charge of the relationships with companies they choose to do business with. When I was ready to go to Antarctica, I was in charge. Theres no way that somebody could sell me something I didnt want. I was making that decision. This is about not pushing products. This is about teaching people something. This is about sharing your expertise. And it doesnt matter what kind of business that you run. It can be any kind of entrepreneurial business. It can be a consumer product. It can be a business-to-business product. It can be a professional service. You can tak e advantage of these ideas and achieve a similar success in your business. Quark Expeditions isnt the most famous they are not the biggest. Theyre the ones that are doing the best job at communicating. Were living through a communications revolution right now. It is a remarkable revolution. Its probably the most significant revolution ever in human history because through computers and mobile devices we have access to practically every person on the planet, and we can provide them information about what our services do, what our company provides, who we are as people. Which is a remarkable difference from even just a few years ago where you had to buy access with advertising, or you had to convince the media to write about you. In other words, you had to spend all sorts of money to gain access to the market place. Now, its for free. You can create content on the web, you can engage with people on social networks, and you can drive people into your buying process. The biggest communi cations revolution in human history. Its about being found on the search engines. Its about encouraging people to share your ideas. On the web you are what you publish. This is my favorite sort of quote I guess well call it a quote that I put into my books and on my speeches On the web you are what you publish. Think about that. For example, Quark Expeditions, publishing great information on the web. If you are publishing great information, youre great. For the other providers that I ran across, the information was not so good, and so if you are proving information on the web thats not so good, that means on the web you are not so good. And even some companies are not on the web. They dont have a website or just a very rudimentary website, or theyre not on the social networks, theyre not doing YouTube videos and things like that. Those companies on the web, if theyre publishing nothing on the web, they are nothing. On the web, you are what you publish. So there are five different idea s around the new rules of selling. Those five ideas areAuthentic storytelling sets of the tone. And by storytelling, I dont mean making up fairy tales but showing people what your business does and how you can solve their problems much like Quark Expeditions does.Content is the link between companies and customers. We saw that in action in my example.Big data enables a more scientific approach. The idea of big data meaning lots and lots of data that you can crunch to generate interest among people that youre trying to reach.Agile selling and real time engagement, numbers four and five, related concepts around the notion of speed.Today, people like to buy. In the old days, it was all about, Oh my God. I dont want people to sell to me, but its a necessarily evil. Imagine going into a car dealer, and you dont have the information you need, and you are at the mercy of the dealer, and thats the way we were 10 or 15 or 20 years ago. Now you find out all the information you possibly can ab out the cars that you may want to buy, and when you go into the dealership, youre in charge, and when youre finally ready to buy, you like to buy.I loved giving my credit card to Quark Expeditions to take $20,000 out of my account when I was ready to buy. People love it. Its about educating and informing people instead of interrupting, and selling them.Which brings me to the slides that youre now seeing. The slides in this presentation are a sub-set, and some additions as well, to a presentation that I have available for free on SlideShare called, The New Rules of Selling. So you can just go to Google, type in, The New Rules of Selling, and it should pop up on SlideShare. Theres a total of 158 slides, so its more than were going to run through today with me presenting, but you can see all that there.Whats interesting about this is that this SlideShare The New Rules of Selling has been live for about a month, or at least about a month from the time that Im created this presentation. Now whats interesting about that is its been downloaded. People have taken a look at this over 100,000 times. Now that tells me that people love to have great content to look at. Because Im providing lots of valuable information for free in the form of this SlideShare presentation The New Rules of Selling people are exposed to my ideas. Same with Quark Expeditions providing information about traveling to Antarctica. The same thing can happen with you and your market. You provide information of value that people want, theyll check out your YouTube videos. Theyll be on your social networks Twitter, Facebook, what have you or you can provide information on your website or something like SlideShare. Really great to get yourself out there. So lets look at this idea of speed. Lets look at this idea of instant engagement. Lets look at this idea of being agile and real time. This is a really interesting and important concept around the new rules of selling because we can now access buyers wh en they are ready and on their time. And thats a really big difference from the ways that so many companies sell, which is creating a selling process thats based on their time. What Ive noticed is that almost all companies that Ive been associated with tend to focus on a campaign style approach to sales and marketing. What they do is they say, Oh, well, maybe Im going to do an email marketing campaign now, or Im going to create a new product launch, or Im going to sell to all of the companies in this particular market over the next three or four months. But thats putting a campaign around your timetable. What Id like you to consider is how you can turn it on its ear, and instead be agile, focus on right now, and identify the buyers who are ready right now to do business with your company. Because speed and agility are decisive competitive advantages. I found out about this in my early career when I worked on a bond trading desk, and on a bond trading desk, like the renommee you see he re, the traders are using real time data, and real time news, and real time charting applications, to make their decisions, and they make decisions involving millions or hundreds of millions of dollars, or even billions of dollars based on the real time information that they see. Guess what? That same information, virtually the same information that their traders are paying tens of thousands of dollars per month to access, we have access to free right now. You can get real time news. You can get real time data on whats happening on your website. You can find out instantly what people are saying about you and your brand on review sites, on social networks, on Twitter. You can see whats happening right now.Mitch Jackson is a lawyer, and hes a partner in a law firm in California called Jackson Wilson. What Mitch does is he operates in real time. And a lot of people say to me, Oh, this sounds complicated. I cant do this. Im busy running my business. How can I do this, David? Well, Mitc h is busy running his business. Hes a lawyer and he also runs a law practice. But he absolutely engages in real time in his marketplace.Heres a real cool example of what he does. Mitch follows the news, and then when he sees a news story either an international or national news story or particularly news stories that have something to do with the California market since Mitch operates in California. What he does is he comments on his blog, in real time, about that news, and many times as a result of doing this, he ends up being quoted in the news, and people find him because they do a search. So during the recent uproar around the NFL, and some of its policies, Mitch wrote about the legal aspects of some of the things that the NFL has been doing, and put them out on his blog. And what Mitch told me is thats helping to grow his business. So thats the same thing that you can do. You can achieve a similar success if you are real, if you are agile, and you are operating in real time. Bec ause real time is a mindset, social media are just the tools. Real time is a mindset.Which brings me to you. The social you. You need to understand that people when theyre researching products and services, theyre also researching you and your business your sales people, your customer support people, or you as the owner of a business, or you as the CEO of a business. And they Google your personenname, or perhaps they Google your name and your company name, and whatever comes up, thats you. Thats your image. Some people have these crazy photos. They have pictures of cats to represent themselves. They dont have a good profile in the social networks. So you need to think, How can I create a bio? How can I create a social presence that puts the right foot forward? Now, to sort of finish up here, a lot of people say to me, David, this sounds so difficult. This sounds like such a process, and I just dont have the time to do the things youre talking about. And I get that. Were all busy. I u nderstand that. But I think you need to think about it in the same way as you think about exercise. Some people just tell me they just dont have enough time exercise. They dont have enough time to keep fit, but the only way you can keep fit is to make it a part of your life. The only way to truly change your life by becoming fit, and taking care of your health, is to do it regularly every day. You cannot dabble. Social networking, I believe to be the same thing, and I have experience in this. Here is an image of me several years ago, just about the time I turned 50, and I said, I need to make a change.Thats a picture of me that was taken recently on the right hand side. Ive lost 50 pounds since then because I changed my lifestyle. I changed the way I eat. I changed the way I exercise, and I have become fit as a result. If you do the same thing in social networks, you become fit in social networks. You create content on a regular basis. You focus on your market place on a regular bas is. You take advantage of the opportunities of people who want to do business with you. You can achieve an amazing success because theres no better calling card than a virtual one.My name is David Meerman Scott, and this has been The New Rules of Selling. If you like what you heard, download the SlideShare called, The New Rules of Selling, and I also have a book that goes into much more detail about these ideas. Thanks very much for your attention, and good luck in getting your sales amped up through these new ideas.

Starting a New Job Dont Take Those Old Bad Habits With You
Starting a New Job Dont Take Those Old Bad Habits With You Whether you are boldly seeking your next career challenge, or desperately trying to escape the job youre in, one thing is true you will take all of yourold, bad habits with you unless you get down to the root causes and make intentional choices to let them go. One of the most common constellations of bad habits occurs when we get too busy for our own good and the combination ofshrinking resources and increasing responsibilities pushes us to the brink. When thathappens, we inadvertently slip into self-defeating habits that drain our already precious time, energy, resources, and focus even more. The herausforderung with this pattern over time is that, when demands outpace capacity, you end up negotiating with yourself about which fire of the day you will put out while the others are painfully neglected. I call this set of imperfect choices th e managers dilemma, because it is truly a no-win situation without an obvious solution. If you manage people, priorities, and projects, then the chances are good that you have encountered the dilemma at some point you may even be struggling with its consequences right now.Whether you want a clean slate in your next job, or you just need to turn over a new leaf in your current role, you cant let the dilemma bog you down. Are You in the Midst of the Managers Dilemma? To know whether or notyou are stuck in the dilemmas grip, listen to the way you talk about your own work. The emergence of paradoxical statements like the following is the first sign that the managers dilemma is settling into your atmosphereI cant afford to relax because things are too busy right now.Im drained, but I have to set an example of perseverance for the team. With so many deadlines and demands, some priorities will have to be sacrificed. Its too crazy now Ill focus better once things settle down. From the outside loo king in, you can see how backward statements like unterstellung actually are. If a friend said something like this to you, it would be easy to point out the flaw in their logic and show them how the undoubtedly counterproductive behaviors stemming from these attitudes will leave them more deeply entrenched in their dilemma. However, when it comes to our own situations, were too close to and too tangled up in them to maintain this level of objectivity. When we are stuck in our own dilemmas, we somehow start believing that this is how work has to be. Over time, the cumulative effect of this way of thinking and working leaves us feeling like there is truly no way out. What was easy is now difficult. What was enjoyable is now unsatisfying. What was just an inconvenient headache is now a crisis. What used to give us a sense of purpose now seems unimportant. This is the managers dilemma. How the Managers Dilemma Forces Us to Make Unfair TradeoffsWhen we are pinned down bythese beliefs, we s truggle to act in ways that align with our aspirations, values, and goals. We are pushed and pulled by the veryirreconcilable choices that are at the heart of what it means to work, manage, and lead well.Which goal rises above all your other priorities?Which fire of the day gets extinguished while others are selectively ignored simply because there are too few resources available to put them all out?Which project receives funding while other high-potential opportunities languish?Which team member gets your attention as other deserving candidates are inadvertently overlooked? These are just a few examples of the critical assessments, judgment calls, and decisions that frame the ultimate concern for managers. Within each of these difficult questions, you see the endless set of tradeoffs managers and influential contributors must make when stuck in the dilemma.Stuck in the Managers Dilemma? Learn How to Get OutThe good news is that the underlying factors that create and sustain the mana gers dilemma can be intelligently addressed in a way that actually boosts your capacity to lead effectively even through the chaos and strain of the busiest schedule. This means you do not have to take those old habits with you into your fresh start. The key is to notice the subtle attitudes and behaviors that ultimately lead to self-defeating routines that keep us spinning our wheels. To start overcoming your dilemma, you can take this complimentary assessment to see if the tell-tale signs are present in your working life.

I Told My Boss I Was Unsure About My Job - The Muse
I Told My Boss I Was Unsure About My Job - The MuseI Told My Boss I Was Unsure About My Job It took me half a year to land my first full-time job- a middle school teaching position with benefits and paid summers. I knew I didnt want to teach in a formal setting, but the opportunity was too good to pass up. Several months in, I was confronted with the realization Id ultimately expected This career track wasnt the right fit for me. Honestly, I didnt know what was. But I did know that I was drained after every nine-hour workday. So, I decided to vent to a co-worker about it- casually, in the hallway, while the kids were at recess. Except this particular co-worker was in a leadership position at the school and it was herbei responsibility to report to our direct manager- the school principal. As you can probably imagine, I was calleuchtdiode into the principals office soon after (yes, this happens even when youre an adult). She wanted me to reflect on how I was contributing to morale by complaining and also understand where my feelings were coming from. So, I did what I thought was my only option- I told her the truth I was having a difficult time adjusting to the responsibilities of the job because I wasnt sure if teaching was what I wanted to do long-term. Much to my surprise, my boss reacted positively. Confessing my concerns led to a solution that completely improved my work experience- and taught me two valuable lessons.1. You Have to Advocate for Yourself at WorkYou know your strengths and weaknesses best, and theyre even mora magnified when youre given responsibilities youre not passionate about. Every leader wants to capitalize on their teams strongest assets- but they need to know what those are to even begin doing so.Once I became transparent about the work I didnt feel confident doing, my boss and I were able to brainstorm strategies to improve my self-esteem and workload. One option included distributing laborious tasks across my team and giving me mora leadership opportunities during lesson planning and teaching. We were even able to reevaluate some of the systems we had in place based on my concerns. When it came to keeping kids on task throughout the day, for example, my main issue wasnt that my behavior management was flawed- it was that some of the systems we had in place needed some fine tuning to help me best work with my students. 2. You Have to Consistently Check in With Your Boss When Things Start to Go DownhillYour boss and colleagues cant help you unless they know you need the help. Finally admitting what was bothering me made me realize I should have done it a lot sooner and a lot more often. Our conversation led me to set personal and professional goals for myself both in this job and future roles I might have, and my manager and I designed a plan to ensure Id reach them in a timely manner. My boss and I stayed in contact throughout the year, and I remained transparent about my uncertainty with middle school teaching e ven after the changes were made. So, we tried something else. When it was time to arrange plans for the next school year, she helped me land a position as a fourth-grade teacher. This meant Id be teaching half the number of students, and because it was elementary school, Id be teaching multiple subjects and not just one- allowing me to explore even more paths for myself. As we had hoped, the switch was a better fit, but I would never have known had we not frequently checked in in the first place. I know, this sounds like a career fairy tale I complained and it all worked out. In your case, that might not be a realistic outcome. If you dont have a manager you can count on to have your back, you may want to do some self-evaluation to diagnose your unhappiness and take steps to improve it. This article can help you reframe how you look at your career, and this one will help you approach your boss with a realistic solution. Whatever you decide to do, just know this before you do it You deserve to have a fulfilling job, but its up to you to make this happen.

Just believing you are multitasking can boost performance
Just believing you are multitasking can boost performanceJust believing you are multitasking can boost performanceFor people who believe that perception is reality, they know that getting someone to believe in something is as good as making it true. This strategy can apply to politics, marketing, and as new research inPsychological Science argues, it can apply to productivity too. While previous research has found that humans are universally bad at doing multiple tasks at once, the new study found that getting people to believe that they were multitasking boosted their performance. Why the illusion of multitasking keeps us mora engagedTo get an engagement boost, you just need to be told that you are multitasking. In the study, the researchers recruited 162 participants and gave them the task of watching and transcribing an Animal Planet educational video. One group was told that they would work on a single task that required them to watch a video and take notes on what was shown. The m ultitasking group was given the same task but was told that they would work on two tasks simultaneously. The reframing of the instructions worked. The researchers suggest that the illusion of multitasking works because thinking we have to do more work forces us to stay engaged. They found that people who were told to multitask showed more pupil dilation during the activity, suggesting that they were using more energy to stay focused.Multitasking is often a matter of perception or can even be thought of as an illusion, Shalena Srna, the studys co-author, said in a statement. Regardless of whether people actually engage in a single task or multiple tasks, making them perceive this activity as multitasking is beneficial to performance.Even if multitasking is all in yur head, the mental reframing can influence our behavior for helpful ends. Next time you have a big task and find yourself distracted, try breaking up the activity into multiple parts to stay focused.

The 10 Most Exciting Trends for Women in 2014 [Pt. 2]
The 10 Most Exciting Trends for Women in 2014 Pt. 2 The 10 Most Exciting Trends for Women in 2014 Pt. 2 Women sharks on the rise (increase of women-owned businesses)Women in the drivers seat (mora female CEOs)Young firms offering jobs for womenWomen going for the gold andWomen becoming tech headsRead on to discover the final five fruchtwein exciting trends and why 2014 will be such an influential year for the ladies.Trend 6 Money-making MusiciansYou noted that women can sing and dance all the way to the bank. What do you mean by that?I recall growing up that there were predominately male bands and musicians on the radio, TV, etc. and very few women. Interesting enough today two women Madonna (age 55) and Lady Gaga (age 27) are the highest paid of all women and men in music and there is a pipeline of women following them such as Taylor Swift, Beyonc, Rihanna, Katie Perry, Pink, etc.The point is that women have many options and can and have achieved in multiple areas. I am excited ab out shows (e.g. American idol) that help emerging artists gain visibility and technology (streaming, YouTube,) where artists can promote themselves.Trend 7 Woman-to-woman marketingWhy is it essential to have more women marketing gurus?I read some interesting statistics on how much spending power women have in the U.S. (85% of all purchases) and yet how many felt that they were being mis-marketed (91%) to because it was men in marketing, not women. A recent case and point I think the move of Mary Barra shows that GM knows that women buy cars.Women buy more than half of the new cars in the U.S., and influence up to 80 percent of all car purchasesWomen spend over $200 billion on new cars mechanical servicing of vehicles each yearAnd we are seeing the trend of women having powerful positions at Advertising firms, as creative directors and key consumer influencers in a number of sectors. This is extremely important to reduce the amount of mis-marketing because women control over $20 Tri llion in worldwide spending.Women are earning, spending, and influencing spending at a greater rate than ever before, accounting for $7 trillion in consumer and business spending in the U.S.Women account for 85 percent of all consumer purchases, including everything from autos to healthcareWomen influenced $90 billion of consumer electronic purchases in 2007Trend 8 Women are financially independentWhat do you mean by Beyond the bling? I think women understand and are concerned about money, investments, savings more than just buying bling. I think women understand the importance and value of financial independence. In the interviews conducted for Women Lead (Peter Lang, 2013) we found that many women had strong mothers as role models who emphasized financial independence and self-sufficiency.And MediaPost offers some very powerful stats when it comes to women and financesThe average American woman is expected to earn more than the average American male by 202851 percent of U.S. priva te wealth is controlled by womenWomen account for over 50 percent of all stock ownership in the U.S.Women control more than 60 percent of all personal wealth in the U.S.Over the next decade, women will control two-thirds of consumer wealth45 percent of American millionaires are women60 percent of high-net-worth women have earned their own fortunesTrend 9 Women are hitting the booksYou state that women are Smart cookies. What do you mean by this and why is it important? In the U.S., the trend is that women are becoming more educated than men. For example, women earned 10 million more college degrees than men since 1982 (61.6 percent AA degrees, 56.7 percent bachelor degrees, 59.9 percent masters degrees, 51.6 percent doctors degrees). The pipeline of women with education is exceeding the pipeline of men and we will see that women will have more options than men as the demand for an educated workforce continues to increase.Trend 10 Breaking through occupational barriersWhat other profes sional areas do you see where women will excel?I think women area making breakthroughs in a number of professional areas such as doctors, lawyer, accountants, etc., and a key factor is working in environments that hilfe integrative lives for women and men so that people can have successful careers and families. For example, the physicians I interviewed for Women Lead (Peter Lang, 2013) noted that many women are pursuing medicine because there are part-time options, which make more sense for familiesOn the finance side, I see a lot of opportunities for women as many finance recruiters confided that firms are seeking executive female leaders for finance roles because they are perceived as more trustworthy than men. I would suggest that women are not your average bean counters. Why is 2014 the breakout year for women?History accelerates future momentum. 2012 was a record year for women running for congress. In 2014 I think we will see the pattern sustain or accelerate. Also, 2012 and 20 14 were record years for women in sports (Olympics). There are increased expectations of younger women and role models will help. We will see more women pursue CEO roles as we have role models from Marissa Meyer (younger age), to Ursula Brown, to Indra Nooyi (Pepsi), to Meg Whitman, to Marry Barra. Women are sharp if they can see a role model that is like them and make it more tangible. We have a number of key female leaders at technology firms (Marissa Meyer, Sheryl Sandberg, Meg Whitman, Ursula Brown) this excites me because we have women who can show women the way in technology, and I think this will help more women pursue technology fields as they are already fast adopters.

38 lessons that will help you write a good business email
38 lessons that will help you write a good business email 38 lessons that will help you write a good business email I had to write emails every day for 4 years in a high-pressured sales environment. During that time I screwed up a lot. I let my emotions show in emails, made the mistake of being too casual, and sent novella-length emails that were probably never read and should have been conversations in person.

Brag Your Way to a New Job or Pay Raise
Brag Your Way to a New Job or Pay Raise Brag Your Way to a New Job or Pay Raise Brag Your Way to a New Job or Pay Raise It's a jungle out there in the working world. Employers aren't as loyal to their workers as they were a few decades ago. And many, if not most, employees are more likely to just jump ship and look for new jobs if they don't feel they're getting what they want out of their current ones. The problem is that many employees begin their job search unprepared. They don't keep track of their most recent accomplishments, so when it comes time to write or update their resume, they've forgotten most of the big things they've done. And forgetting a couple of important accomplishments on your resume can mean the difference between getting the job and not getting even the chance to interview. That's why it's important to keep a brag sheet. It can be a simple document, like a Word file, that you update every time you make a noteworthy accomplishment or reach an important goal at work. The brag sheet can also help when it's time for your performance review. If your boss overlooks or neglects to include something positive that could improve your review, you can use the brag sheet to help you state your case and maybe even earn a bigger raise. Here's an example of an information technology project manager's brag sheet: Feb. 10 Software implementation project for accounting department came in two days ahead of schedule. Department manager very pleased with new functionality. Feb. 20 Department VP said software project came in $1,500 under budget, a 10% savings, which came at a good time since the company is thinking budget cuts for second quarter. April 2 Hired a very skilled contractor to help us with networking project. We didn't have the skills in-house so he'll really help. I talked with three prospects but I'm sure this guy has what we want and can work effectively with rest of the team. April 23 I was right. This guy's good. All the others on the project team, especially Elaine and Mike, agree! When you're ready to update your resume or sit down for your review, you can look back at your entries and whip them into statements you can make about your performance. Here's what the above four entries communicate: The project manager made a critical deadline. He has a reference who can attest to the project's success. He helped the company save a little money. He has an eye for talent with the contractor, and has references who can back that up. Those are critical messages that can help advance your career either within the company or with a different employer. Remember that hiring managers are more interested in reading about what you've accomplished in your career rather than what titles you've held or what duties were listed on your job description. That's why you should record this data and use it when you need to look for a new job, or at performance review time. Make the employer aware of your value!

What Employers Must Know About Hiring Convicted Felons
What Employers Must Know About Hiring Convicted Felons What Employers Must Know About Hiring Convicted Felons Hiring a convicted felon isnt what most businesses set out to do. In fact, most companies would prefer to hire people who will be soon nominated for sainthood, which leaves candidates with a criminal record out. Employers need to keep in mind, though, that many saints have checkered pasts and so may some of your best employees. Heres what you need to know about hiring employees with a criminal history. What Is Ban the Box? Most job applications have a box that applicants check off to say whether or not they have any felony or misdemeanor convictions. But, 25 states and several cities have passed âban-the-boxâ laws. Some additional states have âfair chanceâ legislation, which means that you cant ask the applicant about convictions on a job application. Individual state laws vary, so double check your state or other governmental jurisdictions laws before you ask a person to fill out an application. As a general rule, ban the box means that you cant ask about any convictions until you get to the job offer stage of the selection process. The Purpose of Ban-the-Box Laws Whats the purpose behind these laws? The state has a vested interest in getting people with a criminal history working - having a job reduces the chance of recidivism. If you want to lower crime, you want people working instead of returning to their bad ways. But the other reason for ban-the-box laws is to stop discrimination against black men. However, research has shown that this may not be working as desired - since employers cant ask about criminal history, they are less likely to interview black and Hispanic candidates. Researchers looked at low-skilled men between the ages of 25 to 34 and determined that âin ban-the-box areas... employers are less likely to interview young, low-skilled black men because those groups are more likely to include ex-offenders. They instead focus on hiring groups made up of men they believe are less likely to have gone to prison.â So, while the laws may help actual convicts, they can adversely affect low-skilled black men who have no criminal history. When Can You Ask About a Persons Criminal History? In all states, you can ask about felony convictions before you actually hire an employee. The ban-the-box legislation just prevents you from asking about criminal history before youre ready to make an offer. When youre ready to make an offer you can do a background check which involves asking about any convictions. Can You Reject an Applicant Because of a Criminal History? The answer to this question is sometimes. Some convictions prevent you from having certain types of jobs altogether. For instance, if you run a daycare, you absolutely can and must reject convicted child sexual abusers. Thats an easy decision. In other areas, the decision is not so cut and dried. Rejecting people based on their criminal history may violate the Civil Rights Act of 1964s Title VII. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission says that there are two key points when considering how to treat convicted job candidates. They say: Title VII prohibits employers from treating people with similar criminal records differently because of their race, national origin, or another Title VII-protected characteristic (which includes color, sex, and religion).Title VII prohibits employers from using policies or practices that screen individuals based on criminal history information if:They significantly disadvantage Title VII-protected individuals such as African Americans and Hispanics; ANDThey do not help the employer accurately decide if the person is likely to be a responsible, reliable, or safe employee. Ban-the-box legislation is an attempt to comply with the first part of this (although, its not working), but what about the second part? First, you cant assume an arrest means a person committed a crime that would disqualify the person from the job. If your candidate has a conviction, you can consider that they committed the crime of which they were convicted. If there is simply an arrest, you can use that to start an inquiry into whether or not the person should be disqualified. How Do You Determine Whether to Hire a Candidate With a Criminal History? But, how do you determine if the convicted person is âlikely to be a responsible, reliable, or safe employeeâ? Thats going to vary based on state laws, but here are some general guidelines. Treat people of different races/genders the same. If you go ahead and hire a white man with a drug conviction because it was âjust a youthful indiscretionâ and then reject a black man with a similar conviction youre violating the law.How long has it been since the conviction? If the job candidate has a conviction for shoplifting from six months ago, you can make a strong argument that this is not a trustworthy individual. If that conviction occurred 20 years ago, however, and no repeat convictions have occurred - not so much. How does the conviction relate to the job? You can reject a person who embezzled from a previous employer as your companys comptroller, but probably not for a job as a landscaper with no access to funds.Did you give the candidate a chance to explain himself? If a candidate has a conviction that you say disqualifies him for the position, the EEOC requires you to give the person a chance to demonstrate that the exclusion should not be applied due to his particular circumstances. This means that youll have to sit down and listen to what the candidate has to say and perhaps collect some additional information. Always Consult With Your Attorney About Hiring Employees With a Criminal History If you wish to reject a job candidate based on a conviction, before you do so, please consult with your employment law attorney. Because state and even local laws can vary considerably, you cant make generalized judgments on what you think is best for your business. You need to ensure that you have followed the law precisely and that you arent violating Title VII in any way. Many companies skip consulting with their attorney because that discussion costs money. But, its considerably cheaper to pay for an initial consultation than to have to pay for the resulting lawsuit. Remember, even lawsuits that you win are incredibly expensive to litigate. For jobs with state licensing, use the licensing procedures as your guidelines. If the licensing agency allows the person to have a license with that particular conviction, you should most likely (consult with your attorney) not consider rejecting the candidate because of that conviction either. When trying to decide how you want to shape your policy regarding convicted felons, consider the true nature of your business. Not only is this annoying, it quickly becomes annoying to property managers fielding complaint after complaint. So many have turned to using âGeese Removalâ companies and specialists to help with the problem. With the combination of trained dogs and placing deterrents around ponds, this is a simple way to make some money without the internet.6. Power wash thingsOverhead costs: Power washer. After you get your power washer, most power washing gigs are straight profit aside from buying soaps/chemicals. Cleanup crime scenesThe title said creative ways to make money and being a crime scene cleanup specialist might finish a close second to mailing your poop around the country.Crime scene cleanup technicians specialize in the forensic cleanup of blood, bodily fluids, and any other potentially infectious materials that may be left behind at a crime or accident. In other words, you get to go behind the yellow tape, but only to clean-up the mess left behind.Luckily a crime scene cleanup specialist doesnât have to deal with moving bodies and there is no experience required (Not sure how you would get experience in this area anyways?). While many leverage this as a career, you can actually get certified and be âOn call.âIf you think a career or even a certification is worth it, use this link to find out where you can recieve crime scene cleanup training near you.8. Organize design closetsIf youâre creative and pretty han dy with a drill, organizing closets might be your way to make some extra money. The average closet design costs a homeowner somewhere in the neighborhood of $2,000-$6,000 according to Thumbtack.com. Have reoccurring yard salesNotice, the title for this one was plural. There are pro yardsalers out there that buy stuff and resell stuff every weekend year round. Some will reserve their garage for ongoing yard sales bringing in a couple $100 each month.Having a yard sale every few weeks to sell your treasures and finds is a quick way to make some extra money each month. Posting your items on websites like Craigslist, Offerup and Ebay are great ways to generate sales too. When having yard sales, make sure you always: Start early Recognize simple things sell and add up (Like a wooden spoon for $1) Bargain and upsell other items into a sale Make it easier to see everything Have signs that lead people to your house Conversate and get to know the person, theyâll stick around and buy more 10. Wholesale housesWholesaling houses is what you read, your eyes still work. This might sound a little dicey, but here is the process in a nutshell: Find distressed properties and gets them under contract for 70 cents on the dollar. Without ever pulling a loan or sitting down at the table, sell the distressed property for 80-90 cents on the dollar to a house flipper As the middleman, the end buyer closes and the wholesaler keeps the spread At this point you might be asking why would someone want to buy from a wholesaler? The wholesalers services are in high demand because of the energy, time and hassle they commit to finding properties for flippers.11. Mow grass shovel snowOK, this might not be that creative, but it works and itâs very simple.Grass comes back every spring and grows well into the fall in most locations. Right when the grass starts to die, snow rears its ugly head in most places around the country. Offering your services to a few neighbors each month can help you make a few $100 each month.Quick Math: 4 lawns, $25 a pop, 2x per month = $200 a month. Do this for 6 months every time you cut your grass and you have an extra $1,200 annually.Marketing tip to help you land lawn and snow clients â" look for long grass and older people. If your neighbor is older or the person down the street as long grass, simply ask them (I have made well over $2,000 over the last few years cutting 1-3 neighbors yards each month). My takeaway to making money without the internet:Making money in 2019 outside of your full time job is all the buzz. But sometimes I find myself sick of being on my computer. As someone who teaches full time, blogs at night I am on a computer way more than I want to be depending on the week. So personally, I donât mind chasing the geese at the pond or mowing my neighbors grass. It gets me out of the house and besides, who doesnât enjoy doing something a little different to make money? This article originally appeared on Your Money Geek. You might also enjoy⦠New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklinâs daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

The Beretta M9 Pistol Is Replaced By Sig Sauer P320
The Beretta M9 Pistol Is Replaced By Sig Sauer P320 The Beretta M9 Pistol Is Replaced By Sig Sauer P320 The U.S. Military does not make major moves like changing handguns very often. In fact, there have only been three primary weapons used by the military for the past 100 years. The M1911 (.45 caliber) had been in service since World War I, through the Korean War, through World War II, as well as Vietnam War and into the early 1980s when the M9 Beretta started the handgun contract. Now, Sig Sauer is rolling out its modular M17 and M18 (compact version) into the 21st century. New Modular Sig Suaer Replaces M9 Beretta After 35 years, formerly the M9 Beretta, a 9mm handgun made in Italy, was the weapon of choice for the military since 1982. A new contract has been granted to the German company Sig Sauer for its more advanced modular handgun system called the P320. Also, a 9mm NATO handgun, however, the modular capabilities allow it to be configured to shoot .357, and .40 caliber sized ammunition. The interchangeable grips allow for all hand sizes to find the perfect fit for shooting the weapon ambidextrously. The Army will be purchasing up to 500,000 of the new Sig Sauer P320 which has been thoroughly vetted by gun experts since it has appeared on the market since 2014. Sig Sauer contract could be worth up to $500 million with all the weapons and parts being made in the manufacturing plant in the United States (New Hampshire). In November 2017, members of the Army received the first P320 handguns which will be designated the M17 and M18 pistols. This first batch went to the 101st Airborne. Now, all combat units carry the M4 as a primary weapon and a secondary handgun. Within the next few years, all Army units will be replacing the M9 with the M17. What Else Does the P320 Have? One of the key features of the P320 is an internal stainless steel frame and control unit. Rust has been a problem with weapon systems of the past, especially when exposed to salt water. The weapon also has an ambidextrous slide release (one on each side of the pistol). Modular weapon system means, the fire control unit allows the user to interchange differently-sized slide assembly or polymer grip frame modules as well as chambering conversions to adapt the gun to the individual user and address different needs (larger caliber ammo, hand size, etc.). One of the soldier friendly features is the P320 can be cleaned and field stripped with no tools. There are four side slides on the weapon allowing for a variety of rail mounted laser sights, tactical lights, and other accessories. Breaking With A 35 Year History As recent at 2009, Beretta had secured a contract worth $200 million to supply the U.S. military with 450,000 of the handguns through the year 2015. However, from 2015 â" 2017 the contract was open for competition and finally after a long and drawn out bureaucratical mess, the Department of Defense decided to break ties with Beretta and accept the Sig Sauer proposal. How significant is it that the U.S. military change course with its selected firearm? The Beretta (M9) pistol was originally selected as the main handgun of the U.S. Army in the late 1980s. Beretta, in fact, a few years earlier was the replacement weapons manufacturer to the M1911 handgun that was originally adopted by the U.S. Army in 1911. The Beretta pistol was praised for its accuracy and the fact that its magazine holds 15 rounds and that each bullet is 9 millimeters in size. These specifications complied with standardization of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), a military alliance that the U.S. belongs to. Problems and Controversy With Previous Handgun The Beretta M9 pistol has encountered problems and been criticized by some in the military. During the early 1990s, the pistol encountered mechanical defects. Specifically, the springs in the gunâs magazine malfunctioned. Use of the Beretta was limited within the military after problems with easily rusting magazines and springs after getting wet. If wet with salt water, it was not long before rust was part of the weapon and needed to be cleaned immediately. This is largely due to the fact that the U.S. Army did not purchase magazines directly from Beretta, the gunâs manufacturer. In several cases, magazines have had to be replaced on the M9 pistol. Despite these setbacks, the M9 and M9A1 continued to be the primary sidearm of American soldiers until 2017. The Sig P320 is not without its issues. There have been accidently firings of the weapon when dropped on the ground. In fact, a few police departments placed the weapon on hold until Sig has corrected the problem. In August of 2017, Sig Sauer has started to correct the problem. As of July 2019, the U.S. Army approved Full Material Release (FMR) of its new 9mm Modular Handgun Sig Sauer M17 / M18. Nearly 60,000 have been delivered to military armories so far and more than 350,000 of the pistols will be delivered throughout the next several years. The adoption of the M17 and M18 Sig Sauer is military wide with all services making the change.

How to Land an Internship at MTV
How to Land an Internship at MTV How to Land an Internship at MTV How do I get a MTV internship? Its a popular question for wanna-be music business workers who have their sights set on a career either behind the scenes at MTV or in front of the cameras. Competition is fierce for MTV internships (and internships at their sister music networks), but the prize is well worth it. That kind of hands-on experience at a major music industry company and exposure to the real-world environment that you can expect after graduation can be a big career boost. MTV is part of media company Viacom, which offers a summer associate program. Prospective summer associates apply via the Viacom Careers Summer Associate portal. The 10-week program is for recent college graduates, and according to Viacoms website, its more than a behind-the-scenes view of the music industry. What to Expect from a Viacom Internship Those chosen as summer associates for one of Viacoms properties, which along with MTV include Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, Spike TV, and VH1, will receive what the company calls an immersive experience. Advisers will help associates develop a group business proposal to senior executives and many former associates are hired at the end of their summer program. Get familiar with the channel you want to work for and be willing to pivot if you dont get your first choice. Its worth considering an offer to work at VH1 if there isnt a place for you at MTV, for instance. If there are a lot of candidates for the on-camera positions, consider whether youd want to be part of the team that staffs MTVs Facebook or Twitter pages. Try not to limit yourself to just one potential job; a foot in the door is always valuable for recent graduates looking to break into the industry. Viacom and MTVs summer associates work in a variety of departments, including engineering, product, UX and UI design, digital research, content production, and marketing. This may include work beyond on-air projects, including social media, live events, and web and mobile sites. Applications open in October and close in November, with specific dates depending on the department. First-round candidates are chosen by January, with in-person interviews in late January and February. Candidates will know if theyve made the cut by mid-March. The summer associate program then begins in June. Make Sure You Meet the Requirements MTVs summer associate program is for recent college graduates, but there are usually other opportunities available for undergraduates through Viacoms College Relations department. They tend to vary based on the department and individual channel. You also might seek out internship information through your own college placement office. And MTV frequently has internship drives on college campuses, so find out if and when they are scheduled to swing by your school. Prepare Your Resume Here is your chance to sell yourself. Although not having music industry work experience isnt a deal breaker, if you do have some hands-on music work, by all means, play it up here. And the more versatile you are, the better the chances youll be considered for different positions. Youll want your internship resume to reflect any other skills that would make you a viable candidate, like social media or writing experience. Former MTV interns report that the interview process can move swiftly, so be prepared well before you get that first phone call. And while internships at any of Viacoms properties are highly competitive, being a well-rounded and enthusiastic candidate will get you a long way for any opportunity.
